Have you taken the time to look at your budget and make sure it’s still applicable & manageable? Creating a balanced budget is important as you spring clean your finances. But here are a few other things you can do as you revisit your financial picture & ensure you’re doing all you can to keep things in order:

  1. Pay down your debt: try to tackle your highest-interest debt. Once you pay that off, go to the next highest, and so on down the line. You can’t lose by getting rid of these monthly payments!
  2. Check your beneficiaries: there’s no time like the present to make sure all your beneficiaries are set correctly. Contrary to popular belief, your will does not determine who gets your money from investment accounts. The beneficiaries must be correct in your account paperwork. Make sure you look at everything – life insurance, annuities, brokerage accounts… you get the picture.
  3. Revisit your financial plan: have any life events occurred that would impact your financial plan? Is your risk tolerance still the same? Be sure to meet with your financial advisor to discuss any changes to your life situation or your goals.
  4. Go paperless: using our guide for important documents, shred and get rid of what you don’t need, and consider going paperless for as many financial statements as you can
